Saturday, 9-14-2024….I took the Number 1, a 62 dollar 31 day bus pass dropped me off in front of North Market.
I walked down into Kemba. I saw punks of all ages excited about Columbus’ 2024 liveage.
The Descendents took the stage at Kemba Live.
Descendents’ singer, Milo Aukerman yelled O-H…Kemba Live responded I-O—-Milo Aukerman announced Descendent’s haven’t played Columbus since Staches.
I looked up Descendents at Staches. I found online…Descendents played Staches every year from 1985-1987. I didn’t know how far Descendents went back. The legendary New Alliance/SST/Epitaph/Fat Wreck band launched into “Feel This,” “Hope,” and one of my favorite Descendent’s songs, “Silly Girl.”
I saw a punk in orbit riding shoulders, and hands towards the stage in a trajectory of my left vantage. I looked at our surroundings. A buff kid in a tank-top sung along. Kemba’s entire audience were elated in company of punk legends.
I liked the Descendents as a teenager. I haven’t listened in years. I still like Descendents. I looked around. Kemba was packed. People of all ages filled Kemba. Descendents aren’t a band you regret.
The youths were in control of the excitement.
Descendents played “I Wanna Be a Bear.” Descendants drummer Bill Stevenson’s aggressive rhythm drove the hook and chorus. I’d described the Descendants as Dead Milkmen with Surf City pop attributes.

Ahmir Questlove Thompson wrote a book detailing the first 50 Years of Hip Hop. Questlove’s book: Hip Hop Is History.

Ahmir Questlove’s Thompson is the drummer for the Roots. Do you have a favorite Roots song? I’m biased towards the Roots song, The Next Movement. I find some of the lyrics empowering.

The Roots are headlining the Essence Festival at the Superdome in New Orleans as I type this review….

Questlove is the bandleader during the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Excuse me, Questlove is the music director for everyone’s dream late night show. Every time I look at this……I’m still impressed.

Questlove directed the Summer of Soul. Summer of Soul won an Academy Award in 2022 for Best Documentary, won a Grammy for Best Music Film and won Sundances Top Jury Prize in 2021.

Ahmir Thompson is a best-selling author for Mo Meta Blues, Music is History, Creative Quest, and The Rhythm of Time. He was nominated for A James Beard Award for somethingaboutfood.

Regardless if your favorite Roots joint is “The Next Movement,” “Clones,” “The Lesson Pt. 1” or another song, I wanted to remind everyone what the band sounds like who are running things in 2024.

This year the Roots have headlined Root’s Picnic festivals in LA, New Orleans, and of course an upcoming Roots Picnic in their native Philadelphia.

Pussy Riot performed from the stage at the A+R Bar Sunday after making an announcement
‘Pussy Riots isn’t a punk band. Pussy Riot is a protest performance.’

This didn’t deter a woman wearing a Bikini Kill shirt standing next to me from proclaiming “Pussy Riot is the most Punk Rock thing I’ve ever watched.’

Pussy Riot were performing Riot Days a musical piece which is a book, and movie written by Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina about her stint in Russian prisons for opposing Vladimir Putin.

In 2012, Pussy Riot performed their song, “Punk Prayer” in an Orthodox Russian Church.
“Punk Prayer” isn’t sacrilegious with a King Diamond intent.
“Punk Prayer” invites Catholic women into opposition of Vladimir Putin.

Pussy Riot’s singer was sent into Siberia after approaching Judy Chicago’s conversation about female divinity while opposing Putin.

At first, you might question why would Putin respond if some band didn’t like him?
250 people in Columbus, Ohio were at Sunday’s show.
I saw a woman wearing a La Tigre shirt.
Even with a Diplo remix. I would assume Putin wouldn’t worry about the Riot Grrl movement finding a dislike for Putin.

Prior to Riot Days’ performance, Riot Day’s director took the stage.

Riot Days’ director said Putin’s disdain for Pussy Riot started with Pussy Riot spray painting a penis on a bridge which was outside of the KGB in Russia.
I realized why Pussy Riot irritated Putin.

Russia’s Orthodox Church invited Pussy Riot for a performance from women who insulted Putin with vandalism.
